Rupert Hirner Bungy Jumping

and the bungy jumping story

Bungy History

Dive into the tradition of bungy

How it all began – the legend

Bungy Jumping has its origins in the Pentecost Islands (Bunlap in Vanuatu) hundreds of years ago: Legend has it that a woman fled repeatedly from her violent husband into the treetops. After motivating him to follow her, she jumped in front of him into the depths, not without first securing herself with lianas. After she landed safely on the ground, he jumped after her, but in his anger he hadn’t noticed that she was using the lianas.

The origine of Bungy

In reference to and in memory of this event, from this moment on the women jumped into the depths every year. Over the years, however, the men took over this custom: nowadays only men take part and throw themselves from up to 35m high, self-built wooden towers into the depths. These towers are divided into twelve sections, each representing a part of the human body: the highest, the forehead; Depending on their age and courage, the jumpers jump into the depths every April: with this custom, the jumpers also ask for a good harvest. It is probably in human nature that an annual festival has developed from this custom, which has an extremely expressive character due to the rituals that have grown up on the foundation of legend.

How modern Bungy Jumping developed

It does not seem to be a coincidence that this strong ancient ritual inspired the „Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club“ to start experimenting with rubber bands: eventually the first bungy-cord was developped! It was on April 1st, 1979 when these guys imported this ritual into the modern era using their precious cord to dive off the „Clifton Suspension Bridge“ in Bristol, GB: „Thanks guys 😊!“

First bungy-station worldwide: Queenstown, NZ

In June 1987 AJ did the first internationally famous Jump from the Eiffel Tower in Paris a year before they opened the first bungy-site in Queenstown,New Zealand: rumours say that the tremendous amount of 28Jumpers used this adrenaline-facility during the first year …..since then millions of jumps have been done worldwide!! 1993

The mobile bungy had started to spread rapidly and in June of this year there were already the first 100m jumps for the public: 111m crane at “Gröbl-Möbel” in Lieboch.

In the autumn of the same year, the highest bungy crane in the world at 150m was released for jumping at Prangl in Gratkorn.

On October 3, 1993, Rupert performed the first bungy jump from the legendary 192m Europabrücke near Innsbruck.

The authorities did not authorize building a bungy station there, and so the search for a suitable location began, which was soon found with the Schwarzl Freizeitzentrum in Unterpremstätten, near Graz – and by means of mobile cranes: from there on, the growth has rapidly increased.

This jump caught him so much that he immediately decided (“just for fun”!) to do it in Austria as well. Back in Austria, the thought of it would not let him go and so the preparations for the first bungy jumps from the 110m Präbichlbrücke in Rupert’s home started, which was also implemented accordingly.
